‘Lanterns’ Trailer Reveals First Real Look at DC’s Cosmic Action Ahead of August Premiere
DC’s upcoming Lanterns series gets a new trailer packed with Green Lantern action, cosmic visuals, and fresh footage of
DC Studios has dropped a brand-new trailer for Lanterns, offering fans a much bigger glimpse at the series’ superhero side while teasing the mystery at the center of the upcoming HBO drama.
The latest footage puts the spotlight on Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, two Green Lanterns pulled into a murder investigation that unfolds far from the bright, cosmic battles many fans associate with the franchise. While earlier previews leaned heavily into the grounded detective angle, the new trailer finally embraces the larger DC mythology with ring-powered action, alien worlds, and classic Green Lantern imagery.
One of the trailer’s biggest moments shows Hal Jordan fully suited up as a member of the Green Lantern Corps, using the ring’s energy in combat and showcasing some of the abilities longtime comic readers were waiting to see. The footage also hints that the series won’t stay confined to Earth, featuring quick shots of a mysterious extraterrestrial setting tied to the wider DC Universe.
The dynamic between Jordan and rookie Lantern John Stewart appears to be central to the story. Stewart is portrayed as ambitious and fearless, determined to prove he can surpass the veteran hero mentoring him. Their uneasy partnership seems set against a darker mystery unfolding in the American heartland.
The trailer also confirms the return of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner following his appearance in Superman, giving fans another crossover connection within James Gunn’s growing DC Universe. Laura Linney also briefly appears in the footage, though details surrounding her character are still being kept under wraps.
HBO has officially set Lanterns to premiere on August 16. The series features an ensemble cast that includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
Behind the scenes, the project is led by Ozark creator Chris Mundy alongside Watchmen and Lost writer Damon Lindelof and acclaimed comic writer Tom King. The trio co-created the series, with Mundy serving as showrunner.
The show arrives as DC Studios continues expanding its rebooted universe across both film and television. Following the success of Superman, Lanterns is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most anticipated streaming releases — blending grounded crime storytelling with the larger cosmic scale fans expect from the Green Lantern mythology.
