The 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2023 sprung a pleasant surprise for India, with the award for the Best Original Song to Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster Telugu film RRR. This is when the film has already won some international awards and is in the reckoning to bring home the first prominent Oscar award for India this March.
About Naatu Naatu
Naatu Naatu has been composed by acclaimed music director MM Keeravani — known to Bollywood fans as MM Kreem — and sung by Kala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, with its lyrics by Chandrabose. Incidentally, the song Naatu Naatu was shot in Ukraine outside President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s official home, with RRR lead stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan enthralling us with their dance! (The song should probably win more choreography awards for Prem Rakshith as well.)
The Golden Globes this year were held at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California, USA, on January 10 (January 11 for India). RRR director SS Rajamouli was present at the ceremony along with Ram Charan and Jr NTR and their wives, with Rajamouli having toured the US along with NTR just before the Globes ceremony day.
History was created at the Globes when the popular RRR song Naatu Naatu was announced the winner by Jenna Ortega, the lead star of the hit Netflix series Wednesday. MM Keeravani went up on stage to accept the award.
The song and the movie RRR are already increasingly popular in the west and it will come as no surprise if the film wins an Academy Award. However, RRR did not win the Best Motion Picture — Non-English Language at the Globes.
Best Original Song nominees
Naatu Naatu beat some amazing songs to win the Golden Globe trophy. The other original song nominees were: Carolina from the movie Where the Crawdads Sing, music by Taylor Swift; Ciao Papa from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, music by Alexandre Desplat; Hold My Hand, from the all-time blockbuster movie Top Gun: Maverick, music by Lady Gaga, BloodPop and Benjamin Rice, and Lift Me Up from the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, music by Rihanna, Tems, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Göransson.
