According to reports earlier this month, Twitter had stopped paying its Google Cloud invoices, following Elon Musk’s dramatic cost-cutting crusade.
The source claimed that in 2018, Twitter and Google had reached an agreement to host services on each other’s servers which included removing spam and child sex abuse content, for a period of time. According to Platformer, Twitter’s technology for identifying gratuitous gore and violent extremism is all hosted on Google Cloud.
For several months, Twitter had been attempting to renegotiate the terms of its contract with Google, under which the social media juggernaut agreed to spend $1 billion over five years.
Due to the significant advertising revenue it receives from Google Cloud, Twitter had finally continued to pay its expenses. However, Platformer had learned that “at some point” it changed its mind and ceased making payments, and discontinued utilizing the platform entirely.
However, earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Twitter has finally started paying Alphabet’s Google Cloud again for its services.
Twitter’s new CEO Linda Yaccarino, played a key role in mending the relationship between Twitter and Google. The two businesses are now exploring ways to work together even more closely, including Google using Twitter’s data access tool and spending money on advertising there.
Elon Musk’s infamous cost-cutting and layoff spree
Ever Since Musk bought Twitter on October 27, 2022, which he alleged had been on the way to bankruptcy, he had tightened down on the company’s finances. His most extreme measure was laying off roughly half of Twitter’s workforce the week after he seized leadership, and then laying off other people progressively ever since.
Musk had also cut back on free food for staff and auctioned off Twitter memorabilia. Additionally, he instituted charges to access some of the site’s functions, such as its blue-check verification mechanism, which received a great backlash from the public, including some globally renowned celebrities, politicians, and sportsmen.
The tech entrepreneur had ceased making some payments, which has prompted litigation from businesses who claim they are due money. The claims cover a wide range of topics, including unpaid payments for marketing firms that provided branded goods for Twitter’s premises to rent.
Conclusion
