‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Pushes the DCEU Further Into Obscurity

In its fifth full weekend in theatres, Venom: The Last Dance slid to #5 at the box office, trailing Wicked, Gladiator 2, and Red One. Despite the dip, the film pulled in nearly $4 million, solidifying its spot as a surprise hit of 2023. Notably, Venom 3 has surpassed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at the box office, dealing another blow to the DCEU.

Aquaman 2 concluded its run with $124 million domestically and $309 million internationally, totaling $433 million worldwide. In comparison, Venom: The Last Dance achieved $133 million domestically and $322 million internationally, amounting to $456 million. The film’s opening weekend alone brought in $51 million domestically—nearly double Aquaman 2‘s $27 million debut.

While it hasn’t matched the financial heights of its predecessors, Venom: The Last Dance remains a notable success for Sony. Produced for a modest budget of just over $100 million, it has already grossed over $450 million worldwide. Recently, it climbed into the top 75 highest-grossing superhero movies domestically, surpassing Hugh Jackman’s The Wolverine. It also ranks among the top 15 films of 2024 at the domestic box office, outpacing Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire but trailing A Quiet Place: Day One and The Wild Robot. Internationally, Venom: The Last Dance stands as one of the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year.

Is This the End for Tom Hardy’s Venom?

Tom Hardy confirmed prior to the release of Venom: The Last Dance that this would mark his final solo appearance as Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote alter ego. However, Hardy expressed interest in facing Spider-Man in a future instalment of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). This wish remains unrealized, as Spider-Man himself has yet to make an appearance in the SSU. Sony seems to prefer emphasizing its roster of villains rather than pitting them against the famed web-slinger.

Venom: The Last Dance continues its theatrical run, drawing fans eager to see Hardy’s reported farewell performance in the franchise. Stay tuned for further box office updates and find tickets for this exciting finale at a theatre near you.
