James Gunn Shares Insight on Upcoming Superman Movie: ‘Relatively Serious’ and ‘Family-Friendly’

The eagerly awaited Superman film from DC Studios is inching closer to its July 11, 2025, release. Director James Gunn has been inundated with fan questions on social media, and he’s now offering more insight into the tone of the film and his vision for the new DC Universe (DCU).

During a conversation with MovieZine, Gunn described the forthcoming Superman movie as both “relatively serious” and “family-friendly.” He emphasized the versatility of DC Comics, noting their ability to tell vastly different types of stories. “One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways,” Gunn shared. “We have something that’s relatively serious like Superman and then something that’s relatively comedic like Peacemaker, all in the same universe. Or something very adult-like Peacemaker and something pretty family-friendly like Superman.”

A Universe of Diverse Storytelling

Gunn also reflected on DC’s broad storytelling spectrum and his commitment to maintaining that diversity in his cinematic adaptations. “DC Comics have always balanced family-oriented stories, more adult themes, dark narratives, and lighter tales,” he said. “For us, it’s about continuing that tradition and telling a wide range of stories.”

Breaking Away from Repetition

Gunn further elaborated on his approach to shaping the new DCU, revealing his determination to avoid repetitive storytelling. “A lot of those diverse stories will find their way into the DCU,” he explained. “What makes it exciting is telling different kinds of stories. One thing I’ve grown tired of is stories that feel too similar. At DC, we’re working to step outside of that.”

Superman’s Role in the New DCU

Superman will serve as the cornerstone for this rebooted DCU. Written and directed by Gunn, the film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. According to the official synopsis, the story explores Superman’s struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing while embodying “truth, justice, and the American way” in a world that often sees these values as outdated.

The movie features an impressive ensemble cast, including Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faria, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, Wendell Pierce, and Frank Grillo. Grillo, reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr. from Creature Commandos, recently got an early glimpse of the Superman trailer.

Without divulging specifics, Grillo was effusive in his praise. “I saw a sneak peek of the trailer, and I’m not exaggerating—my skin was hot, and I had goosebumps,” he said. “David [Corenswet] is incredible. He’s going to be a superstar, and James’ take on the film is phenomenal.”

The film’s release will kick off a new era for DC Studios under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran, promising fans a blend of heartfelt storytelling and bold creative choices.

Superman soars into theaters worldwide on July 11, 2025.
