Henry Cavill confirmed the news of him not returning as Superman, saying it was “not the easiest news” to share, “but that’s life.”
Guardians of the Galaxy director and DC Studios’ new co-chairman, James Gunn, took to Twitter later this week to announce that he and DC Studios co-president Peter Safran have finalized a DC slate and will announce more in the new year that includes a new Superman film in the first.
But the tweet brought a wave of sad news for the fans as Gunn confirmed that Cavill would not be returning to the role.
Warner Bros recently gave the actor the nod to announce his return to the role of Superman. On 30th October while confirming the news of him leaving The Witcher, Cavill gave his fans this treat affirming his return as the caped superhuman.
But James Gunn and Peter Safran announced on Thursday the absence of Henry Cavill from the upcoming Superman film. His film will focus on the hero’s early days, which is the main reason for Henry’s absence from the film.
He said that they had a great meeting with Henry and have “talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
The DC Studios and parent company Warner Brothers have been slashing scores of projects to cut costs after merging with Discovery, Inc.
Alas! The wish to see Henry Cavill as Superman has to wait for some more time.
Minutes later, Henry took to Instagram to share the news with his fans. On a somber note, he wrote, “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.” After being told by the studio to announce his return, before their hire, this news wasn’t the easiest, but Henry respected the decision that he and DC’s co-president took after a great meeting. “The changing of the guard is something that happens.” I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes,” said the actor.
Cavill empathetically wrote for his fans, saying that they might want to “mourn for a bit, but “Superman is still around”.
The actor proudly said that even though his turn to wear the cape has passed, what Superman stands for will never slip.
About the new Superman movie
A new Superman movie is currently being curated by James Gunn. In his tweet, he mentioned that his film will focus on the younger years of the hero.
The film’s first part will be during his years posing as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent.
The film will take the character in a different direction.
Reports hint that Gunn can potentially direct the film as well.
Man of steel, Henry Cavill
Henry Cavill’s debut as Superman was in Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel. He returned as the caped superhero again in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, followed by 2017’s Justice League.
And lately, Henry was seen in Zack Synder’s 2021 Justice League.
He returned to the cape for his cameo in Warner Bros and DC’s Black Adam.
Besides the superhero role, Henry Cavill is also known for his unforgettable performances in movies like Mission Impossible: Fallout, Stardust, Immortals, and The Cold Light of Day. His roles in Enola Holmes and The Tudors have made him gain an expansive fandom.
Recently, Henry Cavill has become a fan favorite for his role as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher.
Sadly, Henry left the show after finishing the third season, leading Liam Hemsworth to step into his shoes for season 4.
