“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” Will Reboot the Franchise

Since “Bumblebee” in 2018, “Rise of the Beasts” is the first new “Transformers” movie.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be a relaunch of the Transformers series and will no longer be a covert sequel. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, both the movie’s director, Steven Caple Jr., and its star, Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), confirmed this.

Rise of the Beasts’ status as a reboot has not been determined up until this time (though with the various storylines, this does make sense).

Caple Jr. acknowledged that his Transformers movie will be a reboot of the brand when asked about the tone and themes that viewers may anticipate from the picture. After 2018’s Bumblebee, which mostly broke apart from the prior Michael Bay flicks, Rise of the Beasts will be the franchise’s first live-action movie. Naturally, Bay is still working as a producer on “Rise of the Beasts.” The latest movie, which takes place in 1994, is expected to subtly follow Bumblebee, which was set in the 1980s.

The Transformers: Rise of the Beasts trailer suggests that the new film is already dodging a significant problem with earlier Transformers films. The seventh live-action Transformers film from Paramount, slated for release in 2023, seems to be an action-packed remake of Beast Wars. Rise of the Beasts, which focuses on animal-themed Transformers, has managed to differentiate itself from the previous movies by drawing influence from the beloved animated series and the toys that go along with it.

The Transformers: Rise of the Beasts teaser makes it clear that the battle between the Autobots and humans will take a back seat this time around. Instead, it appears that the conflict between the opposing Transformer clans will continue to dominate the forthcoming film.

While the main antagonist is typically a bad Transformer, these movies frequently rely heavily on the military and government for their involvement in the plot. Bumblebee is a good example of this. However, it appears that in Rise of the Beasts, the humans won’t be controlling the conflict with such a hard hand.

Ramos leads Rise of the Beasts alongside Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah). Several actors will lend their voices to the film, namely Ron Perlman as the leader of the Maximals, Optimus Primal. Michelle Yeoh, Pete Davidson, and Peter Dinklage have also been cast in voice roles for the film. Cullen, who voiced Optimus Prime in all of Bay’s films (and Bumblebee), also reprises his role.

Why the Transformers franchise needed to be reinvented for Rise of the Beasts

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Rise of the Beasts is redefining the franchise in more ways than just having significantly less human intervention. Rise of the Beasts can do something fundamentally different from what viewers have seen from the franchise since it began in 2007 by moving away from the vehicle-centric Robots in Disguise and introducing the Maximals. It makes sense for Paramount to switch things up with its upcoming film given how many films have followed the same template and the failure of Transformers: The Last Knight (the final entry in the main series).

The teaser made clear just how big of a difference it makes that Transformers is utilizing Beast Wars as the model for its narrative. With all of its transformations over the years, the brand has shown quite a bit of creativity, but adding animals has led to some of its most distinctive Transformers designs to date.

The trailer demonstrated Maximals that resembled a cheetah (Cheetor), a gorilla (Optimus Primal), a hawk (Airazor), and a rhinoceros to give an idea of how this transformation might seem in the live-action version (Rhinox). A reinvention was a perfect choice, as seen by the breathtaking aesthetics.

Why Transformers Benefit from Fewer Humans

Similarly, the movie could benefit from focusing more on the Transformers franchise’s robot vs. robot theme. Because of their shared emotions with Optimus Prime and the Autobots, human characters will always matter, but they are not required to drive the action. After all, the Transformers themselves are, of course, the main attraction of these films. Limiting the role that the Beasts play in the conflict—which belongs between the Autobots, Maximals, and Terrorcons—will make Transformers: Rise of the Beasts better.
