Here’s your golden ticket to the chocolatey dream world of Mr Wonka. The teaser to new movie Wonka was dropped this Tuesday and the internet is all over it. The trailer showcases Willy Wonka’s (played by Timothee Chalamet) origin story. We will get insight into everything about his previous life. About how he formed the magical chocolate world, the delicious river and of course the Wonka Bar. And guess what? Oompa Loompas are there too! (in this case only one), played by Hugh Grant.
What is Wonka about?
The trailer opens with Willy Wonka talking about how he traveled the world for seven years to learn all about chocolate before landing in a fictional town in Europe. As he dreams of owning a chocolate shop in the city, he is warned of being crushed by the chocolate cartel. He is told that he can’t own a shop without selling chocolate but the problem is that he can’t sell chocolate without owning a shop.
Willy comes across an orphan girl and promises to make her life better. He goes on to make some unique chocolates and creates one that makes a person defy the law of gravity. After eating the chocolate, Willy and the orphan girl go skywalking one night. Amid all this, Willy gets more willpower as he remembers his mom’s words, ‘Every good thing in the world started with a dream’. And he finally goes on to set up the greatest chocolate shop the world has ever seen. We also see glimpses of Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson as a priest, and Sally Hawkins as Willy Wonka’s mother.
More about Willy Wonka
Director Paul King said at a press preview of the trailer describing Wonka, “(He) is a very interesting, beguiling character and it seemed really interesting to dive a little deeper into him and try and come up with something that perhaps Roald Dahl might have approved of if he’d ever tried to write a prequel.”
“(Chalamet is) following in some extraordinarily big shoes with the people who’ve played the character before and I think he more than lives up to them. He manages to bring that sort of mayhem and that mischievousness but with a deep emotional grounding,” he added.
Is This Film Connected to the Previous Versions of Willy Wonka?
No, Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka may take inspiration from the other chaacters but it won’t be the same. Wonka has no connection to the Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp interpretations of the character. The setting seem to be bit different as well.
When will it be released?
While the film was originally set to hit theatres on March 17, 2023, Warner Brothers announced at CinemaCon 2022 that Wonka’s release date was pushed to Dec. 15, 2023.
Trailer:
The 2.28 minute-long trailer, launched by Warner Bros on Tuesday, follows the story of “how Willy became Wonka” before opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory as per Dahl’s 1964 novel “Charlie and the chocolate factory”
