This year India celebrates its 75th Independence Day. The day is special as India commemorates the birth of India as a free country, along with remembering the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. Indians take this day as an opportunity to celebrate independence from oppressive British rule.
Our independence was only possible because of our brave freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose, etc., who sacrificed their lives so that the nation and its citizens could be free of British control.
History Of The Independence Day
Britishers ruled over the Indian land for more than 200 years, but as the oppression by the Britishers increased, many Indians started revolting against foreigners’ rule over their land.
Many Indian freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, and many others started many movements to take their land back. After many sacrifices, where many lives were lost, India was finally free of the control of the Britishers.
Lord Mountbatten was in charge of transferring power by June 30, 1948. However, the Indians became more and more agitated and impatient, and of which Lord Mountbatten decided to quicken the process by August of 1947.
August 15, was declared Independence Day with the British rule ultimately coming to an end. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolor flag at the Red Fort for the first time. This tradition has since then been followed every year.
