Elon Musk’s controversial takeover of Twitter has led the microblogging app to a devolution. Various other microblogging platforms are rising as a result of users fleeing to other social apps. Platforms like Mastodon, CounterSocial, and now Hive Social are witnessing a boost.
Hive, which originated in 2019, currently finds itself in the top 20 in the U.S. App Store. The social media platform’s founder, Kassandra Pop, confirmed to TechCrunch, that the number of Hive users crossed 1 million recently.
About the Twitter alternative, Hive Social
Hive Social was founded in 2019 by then-22-year-old Kassandra Pop. Hive Social is not a direct clone of Twitter but is a Gen Z-focused social app. As last year’s Teen Vogue described, Hive Social has a combination of concepts from various social networks, including Instagram, Twitter, and even MySpace.
But more strikingly, Hive Social is primarily similar to Twitter and Instagram. Hive has a vibrant, colorful, and aesthetically pleasing vibe. Although it feels similar, it has its share of novelty.
Unlike Twitter, Hive is not completely timeline-based. The main page resembles Twitter but besides the main feed, users can explore their interests across a range of topic-based communities, like science, tech, cars, music, crafts, books, travel, fashion, pets, gaming, art, food, and many others.
In a nutshell, Hive allows users to share text-only posts without worrying about the short word count, post and repost photos, comment and send messages or ask questions. And a paid feature includes the ability to link to Spotify or Apple Music to play music when others visit your profile.
Hive’s sudden surge in popularity
Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and the controversies that are tailing Twitter caused the users to scatter away to find other alternatives. Mastodon appeared to be a strong competitor for Twitter, but some users found Mastodon to be a lot more complicated than Twitter. It is said to have a difficult sign-up process and a host of other issues.
Hive Social, on the other hand, built focussing on Gen-Z, is a lot more straightforward and thus is becoming popular. Not only that, Hive omits ads and algorithms. Hive’s revenue is not based on ads but on fees that users might pay to unlock additional features.
Hive avoids personalization algorithms and works in favor of a chronological feed. This feature is absent in many social media giants. The developers are in the favour of a positive social media experience and are projecting this ideology in their app.
As per the data accumulated from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, in the last 30 days, around 214,000 of Hive’s total 733,000 lifetime installs across iOS and Android arrived. Hive has also gained the attention of those outside the U.S.
The non-U.S. installs accounted for around 86% of Hive’s total downloads.
From 18th November to 20th November 2022, the app also jumped from its 338th position in the overall iPhone app on the U.S. App Store to17th app today. In the U.K. it is in the 17th position and 24 in Canada.
On the downside, the app is accessible only on mobile and cannot be accessed through a desktop or browser connection.
Hive Social can be downloaded for iPhone on the App Store, or Google Play Store for your Android phone.
