Nowadays, it is almost impossible not to work with some electronic devices. This makes eye protection a significant concern. All screens, computers, mobile, television, etc. emit blue rays. These blue rays tend to dry out our eyes. This results in dryness and irritation in the eyes. It is essential to have a clear tear film on our eyes for clear vision.
So, ultimately eyesight gets affected. But, with all the digitization, we can’t avoid these screens. Instead, we need to adapt. Hence the need for eye protection. There are a few things we can do during and after our interaction with screens. They will ensure our eye health.
Take breaks from the screen:
First, the distance between your eyes and the screen should be at least 25 centimeters. Second, make sure to take regular breaks from the screen for eye protection. You can follow the 20-20 rule for this. It means for every 20 minutes of screen exposure, take a 20-second break.
Never look at the screen continuously for too long. This can make you blink your eyes less hence leading to dryness. You can also take some time off the screen to look at the greenery around you.
Eye protection from blue rays:
There are many ways to protect eyes from the harmful blue rays. You can wear blue ray protection glasses while working in front of screens. Another way of cutting blue rays is by changing a few settings on your device. A lot of devices offer an eye protection mode.
You must also keep the brightness of your device at a reasonable level. Also, use good quality eye drops to protect your eyes from drying.
Have an eye-friendly diet:
This goes without saying. Your diet also acts as a great weapon for eye protection. A good diet provides efficiency to our eyes. This helps the eyes combat long screen time.
Include food that is good for the eyes in your diet. They are carrots, papaya, green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, etc. Nutrients like Omega 3, Vitamin A, Vitamin C Beta Carotene, etc. are beneficial for the eyes. So, aim for food items rich in these nutrients for better eye health.
Do eye exercises:
The harmful effects of screens can also be curbed by doing eye exercises. It is a great way for eye protection. They strengthen the muscles around the eyes and relax the eyes. Here are a few exercises to try out.
- Rub your palms together to warm them up. Then place these palms on your closed eyes. It will relax them.
- Blink your eyes quickly multiple times. Do this after every fixed time interval.
- Hold a pencil a few inches away from your eyes and focus your vision on its tips, etc.
Since there is nothing we can do about working on screens, we must make these eye protection practices our habit. They will keep our eyes in good shape for a long time.
