Fashion is a form of self-expression. It describes a person’s viewpoint and how one chooses to go about it. Fashion has changed time and again from sophisticated gowns to pencil skirts to baggy t-shirts. 50’s style epitomized glamor. Women embrace femininity and used to dress up for casual occasions too. Women’s fashion in that era was rooted in delicate pieces. These clothes are timeless and powerful. This is why out of all the eras, 50’s fashion can be appreciated and embraced by modern women.
Trends like pearl core and light academia are popping up which already shows that 50’s fashion is making a way in today’s wardrobe. Fashion stylist and founder of Edify, (an online destination for sustainable and ethical clothing, accessories, and living) expect that modern take on 50’s fashion will also have a touch of sustainability. According to her, the 50’s fashion saw the emergence of new synthetic materials. In 2022 these looks will be updated with sustainable and organic fabrics like linen, cotton, and natural materials.
Below are some 50’s style statements that stylists feel relevant today and share their tips on how to wear them –

Dresses
Garret says that shirt dresses were popular in the ’50s because they provided a woman “clean and classy look”. That was easy to wear and still is one. One should lean towards fabrics like linen with upcycled material when shopping for this everyday piece. Linens are durable, comfortable, and versatile. For more feminine details button-down closures and cotton belts should be added.
That way the whole outfit would be pulled together with one piece. Then to keep it more casual, slides or espadrilles should be added. Cowboy boots for a more country look or sneakers for an on-the-go look.
Footwear
Hollywood costume designer and private stylist Leesa Evans says that kitten heels and oxford shoes from the 1950s are trending in 2022. One will invest in either or both of them.
The most casual of the looks like high-waisted jeans, t-shirts, and cardigans can be dressed up with kitten heels. Oxford heels on the other hand and best be paired with trousers with a frilly blouse or boxy waist sweater to complete the look.
Skirts
Today’s favorite, denim, and mini skirts were nowhere to be seen in1950s. To go retro in 2022 one should opt for more skirts with conservative lengths. But elongating the hemline doesn’t mean that these pieces need to be stiff. On the contrary, Lana Blanc says that retro ball skirts dominated pre-fall 2022 collections with full-skirted silhouettes being spotted at Erdem, Christian Siriano, Oscar de la Renta, and Carolins Herrera.
These flouncy bottoms can be paired with both heels and flats according to the occasion as well as crop tops, button-downs, turtle necks, and t-shirts to give a modern touch.
Color Palette
‘Colour was the main focus of the fashion trend in the 1950s’, says renowned fashion stylist Jake Garcia. “The brighter the better,” he says. He adds, ‘ Now more than ever fashion houses are increasing their production of printed pieces. One of his favorite brands, Christian Dior, is offering 50’s style inspiration.’
In the latest collection from Dior, one can see matching prints on all pieces creation and outfits. The idea of matchy-matchy was created in the 50s and is trending still now. It has become more of a staple for outfits across countries in fashion houses and their latest collection.
